Dec. 3, 2013.  Along with hearing a presentation highlighting the county’s audit at its Dec. 3 meeting, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners dealt with organizational matters.

That consensus, however, changed when the topic of reappointing Eggers, Eggers, Eggers & Eggers as the county attorneys was broached.

After Chair Nathan Miller nominated the firm, Commissioner Billy Kennedy chimed in that he was a “little concerned about the lack of awareness of a seeming conflict of interest” with County Attorney Four Eggers.

Kennedy added that hopefully Four Eggers would do his job well.

Miller disagreed and said that he was impressed with Eggers’ work.

“I understand what you see as a conflict,” Miller said, “ but I don’t see a conflict of interest.”

Eggers came under fire from mostly Democrats after it came to light that he helped his brother Luke Eggers, who is chair of the Watauga County Board of Elections, draft resolutions for elections business in late summer. Four Eggers was on the prior board of elections.

The vote to retain Eggers, Eggers, Eggers and Eggers as the county attorneys went along party lines with Kennedy and Commissioner John Welch voting nay. Miller and Commissioners David Blust and Perry Yates voted to retain the firm.

The board also voted along party lines for board officers. Republicans voted for Miller to remain as chair and Blust to remain vice chair.

Anita Fogle was retained as clerk to the board, and Monica Harrison and Tammy Adams were appointed as substituted clerks.

Below are the commissioner appointments to boards and commissions. These remained the same.
