Nov. 26, 2012. Waffle House might be coming to Boone.

Regarding a half-acre lot across the street from McDonald’s on Blowing Rock Road, the Watauga County Planning and Inspections Department received a variance application for a proposed driveway from the property owner on behalf of Waffle House Inc.

According to the Boone Board of Adjustment agenda packet for the Dec. 6 meeting, Ken Williams of CDL Properties Inc. is the owner of the property that is listed on the Century 21 Elliot Properties website for $429,000 and wedged in between Jerry Butler’s General Dentistry and Boone Pawn and Music on Blowing Rock Road.

“The proposed use of the property is for a new Waffle House restaurant,” states the agenda packet.

The undeveloped, wooded property is zoned General Business and located within a Corridor Overlay district.

Specifically, the applicant is requesting a variance to a section of the Town of Boone’s Unified Development Ordinance regarding distances between driveways. Currently, the ordinance states that distances between any two driveways in the corridor districts shall be at least 150 feet feet.

Williams is requesting a reduction to 108 feet from the adjacent driveway to the east and 80 feet from the adjacent driveway to the west.

The diners are popular with the late-night crowd as every Waffle House is open 24 hours a day, and there are roughly 150 Waffle Houses located in North Carolina.
