Nov. 17, 2012. Each year the United States Tennis Association of North Carolina recognizes individuals and organizations for extraordinary service and representation of the game. The high country will be well represented at this year’s awards ceremony – as Yonahlossee Racquet Club has been awarded the “Best Tournament” honor for its annual Gladys Hackworth Adult Invitational Tournament, held each July.
Awards take place in Pinehurst, North Carolina the weekend of January 26, 2013.
The Gladys Hackworth Adult Invitational has been held at YRC annually for the past 20 years. As a USTA sanctioned tournament, players from all over the Southeast compete in age division brackets 35 to 75 years. Mens’, womens’ and mixed doubles teams begin competition on Thursday and advance in ever decreasing numbers into Sunday. This year’s tournament brought 199 players, 30 draws and a total of 298 entries all competing for 75 first and second place trophies. Also a social event, players & guests enjoy catered dinners, silent auctions and finally, a dance party on Saturday night.
High Country Habitat for Humanity is the recipient of enrollment proceeds, sponsorships and silent auction proceeds. The club is proud that it welcomed a record number of players and raised an all-time-high donation of $7,200 in 2012. Save the date for July 25-28, 2013. The community is welcome to compete, sponsor or just attend the competition.
