Dec. 11, 2012. Appalachian State University has received recognition for operating efficiently, according to U.S. News & World Report. The magazine recently released its list of “Highly Ranked Universities that Operate Efficiently.”

Appalachian is listed second among five regional universities in the south. Others on the list are James Madison University, University of Mary Washington, College of Charleston and Belmont University.

According to the magazine, the new list shows which schools are able to produce the highest educational quality, as determined by their place in its 2013 “Best Colleges” rankings, but spend relatively less money to achieve that quality.

The list was derived by looking at the financial resources a school spends per student on instruction, research, student services and related educational expenditures. According to the magazine’s methodology, Appalachian spends $13,576 per student on those categories.

Operating efficiency is based on a school’s 2011 fiscal year financial resources per student divided by its overall score in the 2013 Best Colleges rankings.

The magazine stated that, “The less a school is spending relative to its ranking, the more efficient it is in producing a quality education among its peers.” The report further stated that, “Schools that are featured on this list are doing a good job in managing their financial resources relative to other schools that may have larger state funding, higher tuition, or larger endowments. Many of these schools are likely to be more affordable in terms of tuition relative to others in their ranking category, since almost all of them are public universities.”
