Update: ASU Solar Decathlon Team Continues Construction on ‘Maison Reciprocity’; Photos Included

by Madison V. Fisler

Nov. 22, 2013. Team Reciprocity continues construction on their project, “Maison Reciprocity” with gusto as the deadline looms less than six months away.

The idea for the “Maison Reciprocity” is a multiple story structure, where one story would house commercial property, one would hold habitable spaces, and flex and greenspace would be included at the top.

Team Reciprocite is just one of twenty teams competing in the Solar Decathlon: Europe competition. After getting a chance to see the ideas of the other competing teams, Mark Bridges, communications coordinator for the team, feels confident in the design.

“We are definite competitors,” Bridges said.

Team “Maison Reciprocity” is also one of the only teams competing in the Solar Decathlon which is not government subsidized. All of the funds for this project are raised entirely by the team, or generously donated by sponsors and community members.

Graduate assistants and volunteers affiliated with the project work in shifts to help complete the unit on time.

Constructed here in Boone, the structure will be built, tested, disassembled, packaged and shipped all the way to Europe, where a team of 30 will rebuild the entire structure in just ten days. With limited time, manpower and resources, the team will put their structure back together in order to be judged and critiqued during the competition.

This year, Solar Decathlon has announced that there will also be “People’s Choice” awards which will be awarded to the favorite of the people.

One award will be a Web Public Choice, and the other will be the La Cité Du Soleil Public Choice, for the favorite selected on the lawn of Versailles. Appalachian State University won the Public Choice Award for the Solar Homestead in the Solar Decathlon 2011.

More information on voting and on Team Reciprocite’s progress will be updated as new information becomes available.
