Upcoming Events at the Hayes School of Music

Hayes School of Music logoApril 13, 2012. BOONE — Appalachian State University has several upcoming performances at the Broyhill Music Center’s Hayes School of Music. All upcoming performances are free and open to the public. 

The Treble Choir and Men’s Glee Club from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will present a joint concert April 18. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Hayes School of Music. Admission is free.

The Treble Choir, directed by Dr. Priscilla Porterfield, will perform Eleanor Daley’s “Ubi caritas,” Andrea Ramsey’s “Veni, Sancte Spiritus,” “Psalm 100” by René Clausen, “Fruits of the Selfless Heart” by Elizabeth Atkinson and “Weep No More” by David Childs.

The Men’s Glee Club is directed by Dr. Tony McNeill. They will perform Franz Schubert’s “Night,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Turtle Dove,” “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” and “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” arranged by Mack Wilberg.

Both groups will perform “Kyrie” from Paul Basler’s “Missa Kenya” and “Jenny Rebecca” by Carol Hall.

The Appalachian Percussion Ensemble and the Appalachian Tabla Ensemble will perform Thursday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. The performance of works by American composers of percussion music is part of the music school’s Contemporary Trends Series. 

The ensembles are directed by Dr. Rob Falvo. The program includes works by Bob Becker, John Cage, Stuart Saunders Smith and Peter Garland. 

On Friday, April 20, a program of saxophone chamber music will be performed by students of Dr. Scott Kallestad. The performance begins at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall. The program includes “Diffusion for Saxophone Quartet” by Gordon Goodwin, “A Lincolnshire Whimsy” by Clarence E. Barber, “Sousa One-Step” by John Philip Sousa and “Super Mario Brothers Theme” by Koji Kondo. 

The Appalachian Brass Choir will perform Sunday, April 22, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Their program includes “Zenith Fanfare” by Mark A. Petty,

“Invincible Eagle” by John Philip Sousa, the first movement of “Symphony in Brass” by Eric Ewazen and “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner. 

The brass choir is directed by Dr. Christopher Blaha and Dr. Drew Leslie

A program of works for symphonic band will be presented April 24 at Appalachian State University.

Donald Peach directs the Appalachian Symphonic Band in an 8 p.m. performance in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free. 

The program includes “American Overture for Band” by Joseph Willcox Jenkins and “The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre. Karen L. Robertson will be the horn soloist for “Morceau de Concert” by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Graduate student Justin Hammonds will direct “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance.

Also on the program is the first part of “Armenian Dances” by Alfred Reed and “Danzon,” from the ballet “Fancy Free” by Leonard Bernstein.

The Appalachian Wind Ensemble will premiere two new works on April 25. The ensemble is directed by Dr. John Stanley Ross.

The 8 p.m. performance in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University is free and open to the public.

The ensemble will perform for the first time in North Carolina Matthew Schoendorff’s “Distance Imagined” and Mark Watters’ “Rhapsody for Baritone Saxophone and Wind Orchestra” featuring Lewis Jones, winner of the Appalachian Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition. 

Also on the program are “Concertette for Viola and Winds” by Morton Gould featuring violist Dr. Erick Koontz, “Concerto for Trumpet and Winds” by Dr. William Harbinson featuring Dr. James Stokes Jr. Koontz, Harbinson and Stokes are members of the Hayes School of Music faculty.

Dr. Jay Jackson will conduct “In Storm and Sunshine” by John Clifford Heed and “Tico Tico” by Zequinha Abreu.
