Unusually Warm Weather for the High Country; Near Record Highs – in 70s – the Next Two Days

By Paul T. Choate

March 13, 2012. BOONE — The High Country has already seen one of the warmest overall winters on record. Now, with seven days left until the first day of spring, Boone is looking at highs of 70 degrees for Wednesday and Thursday of this week, according to Ray’s Weather

With temperatures averaging five to eight degrees higher than average in the months of January and February, it is looking like March 2012 will be more of the same.

The High Country has only experienced the 70 degree range on March 14 four times in the last 49 years, most recently in 2006, and prior to that in 1990, 1973 and 1967.

March 15 has seen temperatures in the 70’s only twice in the last 50 years, in 2007 and 1977. The record high for March 15 is 73 degrees (1977) and this Thursday that record could be broken.

As Ray Russell says, a “White Leg Warning” may be in effect in the coming days.
