March 20, 2012. One of the great singer songwriters, Malcolm Holcombe will perform at the Boone Saloon on Thursday, March 22. The show starts early at 8:30 p.m., and the cover charge is $7.

As always, expect a great performance. Holcombe is a one-of-a-kind who captivates an audience almost immediately with his guitar playing and songwriting, and he effortlessly transcends prior performances – each better than the previous.

After some of his sets, you can hear a pin drop – not because no one is paying attention. It’s precisely the opposite; folks are so enthralled in the music that they forget to clap for a split second.

“It’s nerve wracking. It’s pretty scary but pretty humbling to have, to be able to be of service, and folks are lending an ear,” Holcombe said. “It’s astounding to me.”

The Weaverville-based musician has been compared to other legendary songwriters such as Tom Waits and John Prine, but Holcombe doesn’t understand the comparisons.

“I think that is pretty weird. I don’t get it. I don’t understand. People [have] got to associate an apple with an orange sometime or another,” Holcombe said. “We are just fruit trying to be palatable to one another.”

Perhaps it’s his growl, his rough voice that draws these comparisons because his sound is unique. He might not sound like Waits or Prine, but he is definitely in the same league – on the same team, in fact – as those two and other jaw-dropping songwriters – past and present – such as Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt.

As Trevor Reyes, co-owner of 641rpm, a record store in downtown Boone that hosts multiple Holcombe shows each year, said, “He’s the salt of the earth.”
