June 21, 2012. The Mast Farm Inn of Historic Valle Crucis, North Carolina is pleased to announce it has been inducted into Historic Hotels of America®, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Historic Hotels of America was founded in 1989 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation with 32 charter members. Members of National Trust Historic Hotels of America represent the heritage and development of America.
The Mast Farm Inn is one of less than 235 hotels and resorts throughout the country that is recognized by Historic Hotels of America for preserving and maintaining its historic integrity, architecture and ambiance. There are seven Historic Hotels of America® hotels in the state of North Carolina.
“The trend of cultural travel in America continues to grow,” said Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. “By inviting The Mast Farm Inn into our collection of distinguished properties, we are continuing to encourage historic preservation while at the same time showcasing this hotel’s rich history. Our goal is to bring these historically special hotels and their authentic experiences to the attention of the traveling public.”
To be selected for membership in Historic Hotels of America, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or recognized locally as having historic significance.
“For the Mast Farm Inn, this is nothing short of a consecration,” says CEO Henri Deschamps, “As a historic, fully restored and renovated, yet “rural humble” country Inn, it is a distinction we would have never hoped dream for.”
“… It reinforces our faith that meaning & substance, culture & history, natural & organic and authenticity & integrity, have significant value to people, culture, tourism and in hospitality,” the North Carolina legislature said of the Mast Farm Inn. “It reinforces our primary service ethic which affirms that people and clients are human beings and not simply consumers. The numerous buildings that make up the Mast Farm, each expressive of it function, represent vividly the wide variety of operations necessary to a self-sustaining farm complex. This complex includes one of the most complete and best preserved groups of nineteenth-century farm buildings in western North Carolina.”
Deschamps adds “On our website we quote a Scottish proverb which reads ‘Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat.’… so we are eternally grateful to Historic Hotels of America for having seen beyond the seemingly poor coat to the rich heart within” as we are reminded of guest Emma Johnson’s comment: “So Much More… The world renowned Mast Farm Inn of Valle Crucis is nothing short of a handcrafted masterpiece of North Carolina Folk Art.”
In the late 1700s, Joseph Mast walked all the way from Pennsylvania and settled on much of the land that is now Valle Crucis. The Mast Farm Inn is rich in history and architectural integrity. While there have been extensive historically accurate renovations and improvements, the hospitality remains rural mountain traditional, attentive and sincere. Year of meticulous work resulted in the facility you see today and earned the Inn the Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit from the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina.
