Two High Country Favorites this Friday at Jones House; Lazybirds and ‘Biggest Voice in Boone’ Melissa Reaves

July 19, 2012. The Town of Boone is proud to present the continuation of Concerts at the Jones House on Friday, July 20, with two High Country favorites: the soulful rocker Melissa Reaves, and the swinging roots-based Lazybirds.

Melissa Reaves has been called “The Biggest Voice in Boone.” She earned that title through years of rocking the high country and beyond, even opening for Robert Plant in England. Reaves has dazzled audiences with countless solo performances, utilizing digital sampling and loops to create a wall of groove and rhythm. She has collaborated with most musicians in the region, performing more days of the year than not.

“Melissa seems to have a ceaseless supply of creativity, energy, and soulfulness when she plays,” says Concerts coordinator, Mark Freed.

The Lazybirds have been another High Country favorite for about two decades, combining a variety of roots music styles from blues, jazz, country and original songs to their mix. With guitar, fiddle, harmonica, bass, drums and good singing, the Lazybirds go from a soulful southern gospel call-and-response, to an old swing jazz tune, to a fiddle breakdown, to a Jay Brown original and much more.

“They never disappoint,” Freed said. “They always bring something new to the porch, and everyone is bound to hear something familiar and ‘roots-y’ done in a fresh rendition.”

Melissa Reaves will take to the Jones House porch at 5 p.m., followed by the Lazybirds at 5:45 p.m. Concerts at the Jones House take place in downtown Boone at 604 W. King St. every Friday from June through September. The free concert starts at 5 p.m., and patrons are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit in the lawn. The 2012 Concert series is sponsored by Mast General Store, Footsloggers, MPrints, Stickboy Bread/Melanie’s, and the Downtown Boone Development Association.
