Appalachian RollerGirls Need Your Help to Take on The French Broads Holmes Convocation Center Aug. 3

by Madison V. Fisler

Aug. 2, 2013. High speed, non-stop action, top-notch female athleticism and benefiting a good cause to boot, if you’ve never been to a roller derby bout, it’s high time you checked it out.

Going into your first Appalachian RollerGirls bout, you may be a bit intimidated. The team is fierce, the crowd is pumped and the entire scene is alive with sights and electric with the energy and excitement. Heading into the Holmes Convocation Center on Aug. 3 you will certainly find yourself caught up in the hype and excitement.

This legendary bout comes after two previous match-ups between the RollerGirls (1 and five) and the French Broads of Asheville, with one win for each team. This bout will be a tiebreaker, and is sure to be the epic event of the season.

“They beat us two years ago, and we beat them last year,” said RollerGirls team captain Jennele Vaquera.

“We are really evenly matched.”

The entire event is family friendly, with tailgating in the parking lot behind the convocation center and activities for kids like face painting, a sign making station and halftime activities.

If you think roller derby is just pretty girls on skates, you’re dead wrong. But don’t take my word for it. Follow the energy and the excitement to the Holmes Convocation Center at Appalachian State University’s campus on Aug. 3. Doors open at five and the bout will begin at six.

Tickets for the bout are $10 in advance, $8 for students with valid student ID and $12 at the door. Tickets are available at the Homes Convocation Center Box Office, at Black Cat Burrito, Lucky Penny, Boone Drug-Deerfield, Woodlands Barbecue or from any of the members of the Appalachian RollerGirls team.

But these tough girls have a soft side as well. The Appalachian RollerGirls’ last home bout of the season will benefit the Beautiful You MRKH Foundation, an organization that strives to promote self-esteem and empowerment for girls who have been diagnosed with MRKH.

The Appalachian RollerGirls are always looking for volunteers and new teammates. Interested parties should email info@appalachianrollergirls.com
