The Appalachian RollerGirls Faced Off Against The Apocalypstix From Atlanta on May 4 in Boone

May 9, 2013. On May 4, our hometown roller derby team, the Appalachian RollerGirls, faced off against The Apocalypstix from Atlanta. This home bout started at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Convocation Center on Appalachian State University’s campus in Boone.  

The Appalachian RollerGirls were defeated 294-104 in their bout against the top ranked opponent. The Atlanta Apocalypstix is ranked second in the southeastern region. 

“Both teams got points up in the beginning, but what got us were the penalties,” said Ashley Laws, also known as Ashinator 2000, a blocker for the Appalachian RollerGirls. 

ARG VS ATL APLSTX_0163 The competition at the bout was fierce, with both teams displaying impressive athleticism and teamwork. “We never gave up,” Laws said. “We played so hard in all that we did.” 

This proceeds from this bout went toward the ASU chapter of Autism Speaks. The RollerGirls wanted to give back to the university and at the same time support a worthy charity. Though official numbers have not yet been released, the RollerGirls are excited about being able to help raise money and awareness for the organization.

At their next bout, the Appalachian RollerGirls will travel to Knoxville, TN to face the Knoxville RollerGirls on June 6. The Appalachian RollerGirls are enthusiastic, excited and optimistic about their upcoming challenge. 

“I think that we have plenty of time to correct our mistakes from our last bout before this one,” Laws said. “We are feeling good about it.”
