by Madison V. Fisler

July 26, 2013. From Thursday through Saturday, July 25-27, the 34th annual High Country Crank Up hits the High Country in Deep Gap.

Gates for the event open up at 9 a.m. at U.S. 421 across the street from Laurel Springs Church, and the show will feature many events that are great for the entire family, including a pedal tractor pull for kids, antique engine showcases, homemade ice cream, the annual “Parade of Power” and much more.

There will also be barbecue, hamburgers and hot dogs offered by various vendors.

“It’s like a big family reunion,” said Jeff Hodges, a member of Carolina Fly-Wheelers, who is sponsoring the event.

“All of this stuff from the early 1900s through 1960 was put out of business by electricity. We like to restore them and show them off so the younger generation can get interested and see what it was like back then.”

The Carolina Fly-Wheelers were formed well before the first Crank Up show in 1979, with the mission of restoring pieces of machinery and displaying them to the public.

imgres-1Tickets to the Crank Up are $5 for each day, or $8 for a three day pass and $6 for a two day pass. Kids 12 and under get into the event free of charge, and seniors get a special discount on Sunday, making their tickets only $3.

Machinery that can be expected at the Crank Up includes lawn mowers, garden tractors, washing machines, old farm equipment and much more.
