Currently titled Four Down, the doc will follow the fishing trip accident that happened 70 miles from shore in the Gulf of Mexico that left Nick Schuyler, along with NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith, and Schuyler’s best friend, Will Bleakley, stranded at sea after the boat capsized.
Schuyler was rescued by the United States Coast Guard 43 hours later, but the accident took the lives of Cooper, Smith and Bleakley. The families of those lost in the tragedy will be invited to participate in the project so as to honor the memories of their loved ones.
Steven Cantor— veteran sports documentary filmmaker and Oscar nominee— is set to direct.
Dakota Group (Kusama: Infinity), Stick Figure Entertainment, and Prix Productions will also produce the doc based on the 2010 memoir, published via HarperCollins and written by Schuyler and Jere Longman.
Stanley Buchthal, David Koh, Jamie Schutz and Rick French will produce, with Johnson, Garcia, and Seven Bucks’s Hiram Garcia executive producing, as well as Schuyler. (Johnson has long been a champion of the Not Without Hope, at one point attached to star in a narrative adaptation of the story.)
“I followed this story in the news as it was occurring and then could not put Nick’s book down, so I’m excited to bring it to the screen in all of its harrowing detail,” said Cantor.
Added Hiram Garcia: “This story is an incredible account of both tragedy and triumph, showing us that the human spirit is stronger than any obstacles put in front of us. Dwayne, Dany and I are honored to help tell the story of that fateful day and hope to honor the memory of both those lost and the incredible rescuers who saved Nick’s life.”
“Dwayne, Hiram and Dany have been huge supporters of telling this story for the past seven years, so Nick and I are extremely grateful they have come on board to help honor the memories of Marquis, Corey and Will, and the heroism of the United States Coast Guard, who refused to give up on what appeared to be a hopeless search and rescue effort against almost insurmountable odds,” said French.
