Sixth Annual Relay for Life Scarecrow 5K Run/Walk

By Samantha Hudson

Oct. 10, 2012. On Saturday Oct. 13 the sixth annual Relay for Life Scarecrow 5K will take place at the Greenway Trail in Boone.

The registration fee is $20 or a family rate of $45. T-shirts will be available for those who registered after the October 4th deadline on a first come, first serve basis.

The event is sponsored by Relay for Life team Jerry’s Intimidators as well as local area businesses such as Ed’s Lock and Key, NAPA Auto Parts, Charlie’s Auto Parts, Toby Oliver Insurance and Foscoe Country Store and Deli.

“Our goal is to get as many as we can to raise money for the American Cancer Society,” said Jerry’s Intimidators co-captain Paula Ward.

The event began in 2007 in honor of Wards father who died of colon cancer in 1997 and Ward says they’ve seen a huge increase since the beginning.

“We’ve already got 156 registered right now, typically we could have up to 180 registered with an average of 150 or 160 who run, or we may have the whole 180,” Ward said. “It’s something that I’m very passionate about. You don’t really find someone who’s not been affected by cancer in some form or fashion.”

All proceeds benefit the Watauga County American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

“A lot of the money raised stays in Watauga County and goes to the Seby Jones Cancer Center,” Ward said.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the overall first place male and female as well as to the master’s male and female. Awards will also be given to the top three male and female age group winners.

Refreshments will be served, and all participants will be eligible for door prizes.
