Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Orientation Classes Forming at the Avery Adoption and Education Center

April 24, 2012. NEWLAND – Avery County Humane Society and Melissa MacKinnon of Woof Pack Pet Services are offering Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Obedience classes for dogs and their owners at the new Adoption and Education Center beginning May 21. To sign up, visit www.woof-pack.net or call 828-733-2333.

Puppy Kindergarten is a class for puppies from four months to one year of age, focusing on socialization, problem puppy behaviors, leash walking and six basic commands.

Basic Obedience is a class for dogs over one year of age, focusing on learning 12 basic commands with distraction and proper leash walking.

Classes are on Monday nights, for six weeks, beginning on May 21. Puppy Kindergarten is at 6 p.m. and Basic Obedience is at 7 p.m. The cost is $175 for the six-week course. If you adopt a dog or puppy from Avery Humane, you will receive a discounted rate of $150.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Avery Humane. Training is one of the best investments a dog owner can make to encourage a good relationship between dog and owner and protect the animal as well as the owner’s family and property.

Avery County Humane is also starting a volunteer dog training program for shelter dogs to better prepare them and their owners for a long and happy relationship. If you are interested in being a dog training volunteer, complete a volunteer application at www.averyhumane.org and specify your interest in doing dog training, or call Claire Arnold at 828-733-2333.

The first volunteer orientation class will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 6 to 6:45 p.m.
