Perseid Meteor Shower To Peak on Saturday

Aug. 9, 2012. The most exciting astronomical show of the summer, the Perseid meteor shower, should be at its best on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Find a spot in the dark with a wide-open view of the sky, bundle up against the late-night chill, lie back in a lounge chair, watch the sky and be patient. After 11 p.m. or midnight, expect to see at least a meteor each minute on average with fewer at first.

The thick waning crescent Moon will rise by 1 or 2 a.m. with Jupiter right above it. You’re also likely to see occasional Perseids for many nights before and after.
