June 26, 2012. The Banner Elk Chamber along with the Town of Banner Elk will host the annual 4th of July Parade on Wednesday, July 4 at 11 a.m. The parade route begins at Lees-McRae College and ends at the Tate Evans Park in Banner Elk.
The Banner Elk Chamber 4th of July Parade Committee is issuing an open call to all organizations, institutions and individuals who wish to be a part of this year’s parade. All interested parade participants must pre-register for the parade by June 22.
Used book donations are again being sought by Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk, prior to its annual 4th of July Used Book Sale, that will be held at the Banner Elk Town Park. Giant blue barrels have been placed across Avery County to collect donated books. Barrel locations include the Banner Elk, Linville and Newland post offices, Bank of America in Banner Elk, YMCA of Avery County in Linville, Linville Land Harbor, Fifth Third Bank in Banner Elk and Beech Mountain Town Hall. Book sale proceeds go toward purchasing books for Avery County Schools and students. All donated books will be sold in Banner Elk at the 4th of July Festival and Party in the Park, held this year from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Banner Elk Kiwanis is joining with the Town of Banner Elk to provide a Star Spangled 4th for all. Beginning at 9 a.m., there will be a book sale in the Tate Evans Park. The Annual 4th of July Parade is at 11 p.m. Following the parade the excitement returns to the park where there will be food available for purchase and games provided for the children. There will be food, fun, crafts, baked goods, plants, flowers, books, field games to include egg toss, sack race, pudding eating contest, watermelon eating contest, 3-legged race, dizzy bat, music and the great American rubber ducky race. Duck races will be held with tickets available for $5 per duck. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded for winning ducks.
