Newly Updated Hound Ears Club Golf Course Named One of the Top 100 in State by Business North Carolina

May 16, 2012. For the sixth consecutive year, Business North Carolina named Hound Ears Club one of the best 100 Tar Heel courses of 2012. The private golf course, centrally located between the resort towns Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk, was designed by golf legend George Cobb. It opened in the spring of 1964 and boasts many beautiful streams and vistas.

For a mountain course, the terrain is relatively flat, resulting in a very playable layout for golfers of all levels. While no fewer than eight tee boxes have been renovated throughout the golf course, other aesthetic and game-friendly improvements include the construction of a rock wall, rock steps and a rock walkway through the tunnel on hole #15.

“I have been fortunate enough to be associated with Hound Ears Club for 27 years,” said Hound Ears Club Director of Golf Peter Rucker. “There is no other place I would rather be. Once you have an opportunity to visit us and play our course, I am sure you will feel the same. Our course is scenic and challenging but it won’t beat you up, either.”

The North Carolina Golf Panel is a 135-member organization that includes journalists, golf professionals, college coaches, noted amateurs and business leaders. The NC Top 100 is determined by a scoring system, which takes into consideration conditioning, routing, design, strategy, memorability, fairness, variety and aesthetics. Panelists can only vote for courses they have played.

“We have an outstanding golf operations and maintenance staff at Hound Ears Club,” said General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Don Vance. “Our Director of Agronomy, John Tester, and his assistant, Allen Storie, along with their agronomics staff, have been working diligently on a number of golf course renovation projects. Hound Ears Club is extremely proud to be recognized for another prestigious golf achievement.”
