Guided Canoe Trip
Sunday, June 10, 1 p.m. at Wagoner Access
Join a park ranger at the Wagoner Access for a 2-hour float down the wild and scenic New River. You will learn basic canoeing paddle strokes and must be able to help carry and load canoes. Rangers will interpret many sights along the route. The trip is limited to 8 visitors, so please call the park office for a reservation: 336-982-2587.
Track Trail Hike
Saturday, June 16, 2 p.m. at US Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center
Join a park ranger on this fun hike designed for kids. This is part of a “Kids in Parks” program where participants can go online after the hike to receive awards. Make sure to wear appropriate clothes and shoes for the weather. The hike should last about 1 hour. To find out about other “Track Trails” all around North Carolina, go to www.kidsinparks.com.
Black Bears
Sunday, June 17, 10 a.m. at US Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center
Join a Park Ranger to learn about this often feared creature. Black bears can be found throughout a large portion of North Carolina. They often make the news when they pass through a populated area. This program will separate the facts and myths about black bears.
Metamorphosis: Life of the Dobsonfly
Sunday, June 17, 2 p.m. at US Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center
Come out to New River state Park and learn about the fascinating life of the Dobsonfly. Meet at the Visitor Center for a short presentation and then we will go to the river and explore. Bring clothes to get wet and wear appropriate footwear.
Kids Fishing Program
Saturday, June 23, 9:30 a.m. at Wagoner Access
Join a ranger for some kids fishing fun. You will learn basic skills for casting and knot tying, then go down to the river and fish. Space is limited so please call 336-982-2587 to sign-up for this program.
Aquatic Sampling
Saturday, June 23, 1 p.m. at Wagoner Access
Meet a park ranger for hands on search for aquatic insects in the New River. Come prepared to get wet. Meet at the contact station of Wagoner Access.
