Mountain Home Music Presents Acoustic Trio from Asheville, Red June, June 9 at Blowing Rock School

June 7, 2012. Lawnmowers are humming, the leaves are finally in full bloom, little league baseball parks are filled with chatter and cheers, fresh vegetables fill roadside stands and summertime based cultural activities have started, or are getting ready to start, in the High Country.

Count Mountain Home Music among the early starters for the summer season. Coming up to its fourth concert, it’s June on Mountain Home Music this week, too. It’s Red June. Red June, the acoustic trio from Asheville, North Carolina, will be featured this on this week’s concert, “From Asheville to Boone: Red June.”

The concert will take place on Saturday, June 9, at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium. Starting time is 8 p.m.

The music is Red June is Appalachian fiddle tunes, contemporary jazz, swing, and original songs. The group features Will Straughan on resonator guitar, vocals and guitar; John Cloyd Miller on mandolin, vocals and guitar; and Natalya Weinstein on fiddle and vocals.

The three have been longtime friends and first jammed together at a pickin’ party in Asheville in 2005, said fiddler Natalya Weinstein. In late 2008 they formed Red June and went on to release their debut album Remember Me Well in 2010. Remember Me Well was voted the #1 regional release of 2010 by the listeners of public radio station, WNCW.

“For those who seek well-crafted songwriting and impeccable musicianship, you just can’t go wrong with the acoustic instrumentation and powerful harmonies of Red June’s Remember Me Well. It’s an exciting debut from a collective of outstanding performers,” writes Chris Mateer in No Depression Magazine.

Soon after the release of Remember Me Well, Red June started touring; while on tour, they performed on Music City Roots, a live radio show in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in Bristol Tennessee/Virginia, and the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. More recently, they performed at this year’s MerleFest in Wilkesboro.

Red June plans to release a new CD, Beauty Will Come, on June 5.

North Carolina songwriter & musician Joe Newberry says, “Red June is one of our truly great bands. They never fail to talk the talk and walk the walk.”

Also appearing on Mountain Home Music this week will be hammer dulcimer player Martin Moore. “Moore was scheduled to be on our June 2 show,” said Joe Shannon, host of Mountain Home Music, “but he agreed to move his performance back a week so we could do a special tribute to Doc Watson.”
