Aug. 13, 2012. Gospel and soul will be the music of the day at the Jones House on Friday, Aug. 17, at 5 p.m., as The Boone Mennonite Brethren Church Choir and Soul Benefactor take to the porch and continue the 2012 Summer Concerts at the Jones House.
The Boone Mennonite Brethren Church Choir has a long history of good music. Guitar player, Brian Yerman, remembers going with the group to Merlefest to perform in the 1990s. Today, the group is led by multi-instrumentalist Danny Whittington, who played in the church as a young man with his mother and siblings as the Heavenly Gospel Aires. Whittington has been the choir director at the church for the past six years, and he will have a full band with him, including Yerman, Sam Tate, members of Soul Benefactor, and the church choir on Friday.
Soul Benefactor will follow the choir and bring their blend of soul, funk, rock, classic songs from the 1960s and 70s. The band celebrates their five-year anniversary this month, having originally started as a one-time party performance that snowballed into five years of organized shows. The band has spent the time honing in on classics from artists like Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marin Gaye, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, and much more. Filled with multi-instrumentalists and a horn section, Soul Benefactor will have the audience out of their chairs and on their feet.
Concerts at the Jones House take place in downtown Boone at 604 W. King St. every Friday from June through Sept. The free concert starts at 5 p.m., and patrons are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit in the lawn. The 2012 Concert series is sponsored by MPrints, Stickboy Bread/Melanie’s, Footsloggers, Mast General Store, and the Downtown Boone Development Association.
