Local Violinist Performs Bach, Paganini, Mozart in End-of-Year Recital at Broyhill Music Center May 25

May 18, 2012. Maura Shawn Scanlin of Vilas will perform an end of the year violin recital on Friday, May 25, at 7 p.m. in the recital hall of the Broyhill Music Center, 813 Rivers St. on the campus of Appalachian State University. The recital is free and open to the public with a reception following.

Scanlin will perform works by Bach, Paganini, Mozart and Kreisler. She will be accompanied by pianist Nancy Johnston from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Scanlin currently studies classical violin with Sarah Johnson at UNCSA and has just completed her junior year of high school.

Scanlin has been playing violin since she was three years old. Her teachers have included Nan Stricklen of Banner Elk, Jacob Dakon of ASU’s Community Music School and Dr. Nancy Bargerstock of the Hayes School of Music at ASU. In addition to her classical music studies, Scanlin is also a fiddler and plays with the local group the Forget-Me-Nots. She also holds the title of US National Scottish Fiddling Champion in both the junior and open divisions.

This past year year Scanlin was selected to be the concertmaster of both the North Carolina All State Honors Orchestra and the Western Region Honors Orchestra. She plans on pursuing a career in music and will spend part of this summer studying at the Boudoin International Music Festival in New Brunswick Maine.
