Sept. 25, 2013. A national competition is coming to the High Country this weekend. On Saturday, Sept. 28, the local chapter of the National Football League’s Punt, Pass & Kick competition will be held at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone.

The NFL PP&K Competition  is a national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of six and 15 to compete against their peers. This competition is the oldest youth program established by the NFL in 1961.

“It gives kids the opportunity to showcase their talents,” said Mike Gove who is organizing the Boone event.

“It really gets kids excited about being active and getting outside to do things.”

The competition involves each participant throwing one pass, completing one kick and one punt. The participants are given scores based on their punt, pass and kick and the scores are totaled up.

The highest-scoring participant from each age group will continue to advance until they reach the state level competition at Panthers Stadium in Charlotte. If they advance from there, the participants have a chance to make it to the national competition.

The highest scorers in each of the ten age divisions from all 32 team championships will advance to the National Championship. The 40 winners and one guest each will travel to the championships which will take place at a January NFL playoff game.

Registration for the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the competition officially beginning at 10 a.m. Participants must bring their birth certificate or other proof of age. Participants must also wear tennis shoes during the competition, no cleats allowed.

The entire event is completely free and open to all kids ages 6-15, boys and girls.

Mount Vernon Baptist Church is located at 3505 Bamboo Road in Boone. This is the only local location for this Pass, Punt & Kick event.
