Local Area Schools, Colleges and Universities Return to Normal Session in the New Year for Spring 2014

Dec. 31, 2013. January starts tomorrow, and everyone in the High Country knows what that means. Soon enough, school will be back in session and the kids will be headed back to class.

Here is our “back to school” list so you know when and where schools will be back in session.

Higher Education

Appalachian State University will hold the first day of classes for the Spring 2014 semester on Jan. 13.

Locals should expect students to be returning to town the weekend before, Jan. 11 and 12, and should expect moderate congestion on the roads as the student population returns to the area.

For Lees-McRae College, dormitories will reopen for students to return on Sunday, Jan. 12. The first day of classes for the college is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Caldwell Community College will return to session on Jan. 8. 

Public Schools

For Watauga County Schools, students will resume class on Monday, Jan. 6. Jan. 20 will be a teacher workday when the students are not required to come to school. The rest of the month will proceed with the regular academic calendar.

Avery County Schools will resume class on Tuesday, Jan. 2 immediately following the New Year’s holiday. Students will also be out on Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King, Dr. Day, and on Jan. 17 for a teacher workday.

Wilkes County Schools will resume class on Monday, Jan. 6. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be observed on Jan. 20 as well as a teacher workday the following day and on Jan. 17.
