Local Agencies Join Forces for Health Screening Fair

July 6, 2012. With the mission of helping those in need, local healthcare agencies partnered with the Hospitality House to host a Health Screening Fair on Tuesday, June 26. Agencies giving of their time and talents were the Watauga County Health Department, Appalachian Regional Healthcare’s Healthy Carolinians, Appalachian State University’s Nursing Department and the Charles and Geneva Scott Scottish Rite Communication Disorders Clinic at ASU.

“Health screenings have always been one of our expanded service goals,” said Hospitality House executive director Lynne Mason. “With our ever-increasing community partnerships and larger facility we are thankful to have realized this goal so quickly.”

Services offered were blood pressure tests, height and weight monitoring, blood sugar testing, tuberculosis testing, TDAP vaccinations (Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis), hearing screening, vision screening and literacy /speech screening. Twenty-seven people were served at the Health Fair including emergency, transitional, family and permanent Hospitality House residents as well as members of the community with no access to regular health physicals. Many medical issues were identified and addressed in the Review and Referral session at the end of the fair.

Health Fair coordinator Caroline Bond puts the Health Screening Fair’s importance in perspective.

“The population served by the fair is one of the most under-served and at risk,” Bond said. “Having these services accessible to those in need means being able to identify, triage and treat medical issues before they become too serious or life threatening.”
