Library to Host Volunteer Service Fair Nov. 7

Nov. 2, 2012. The Watauga County Public Library received a Building Common Ground grant from the American Library Association and the Fetzer Institute earlier this year to support a year-long project called “Food Security in the High Country: Compassion Comes to the Table.”

The project is a collaboration between the Watauga County Public Library, the Appalachian State University Office of Sustainability, the Appalachian Humanities Council, and the pay-as-you-can restaurant F.A.R.M. (“Feed All Regardless of Means”) Café. Its goals are to help participants understand the connections between food security, sustainability, and compassion, develop skills to address our area’s food security challenges, and cultivate a deeper commitment to the common good of our community. The library has hosted book discussions, movies, and an art project over the course of the year. We have two remaining programs before the grant period will end.

The library will host a Volunteer Service Fair on Nov. 7 from 4-6 p.m. and all are welcome to network and learn about new and exciting volunteer opportunities!

Attendees will include Western Youth Network, Elkland Art Center, Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, Farm Cafe, ASU’s ACT (Appalachian Communities Together) office, and Office of Sustainability, and the Senior Center / Project on Aging.

On Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10:00 am, Carla Ramsdell, Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appstate, will present Know ”Watts” Cooking: The Physics of Energy Efficient Cooking.

Join us for a full informative, 1-hour cooking demonstration hi-lighting different cooking methods and their relative energy usage.

Learn the answer to ”What’s the most efficient way to boil water?”, ”Do solar ovens really work?”, ”How important is a lid in cooking?” and more!

The library is located at 140 Queen Street in Boone. For more information, call 828-264-8784.
