June 29, 2012. The Society for Technical Communication (STC) honored Appalachian State University Assistant Professor Pamela Estes Brewer in a ceremony at its annual conference in Rosemont, Ill., in May.
Brewer, a senior member of the society, was named an associate fellow – one of the highest ranks that the society confers upon a member. Candidates for this honor are nominated by members and must have at least 15 years of experience in technical communication and have been a member for at least 10 years. Recipients have attained eminence in the field of technical communication through achievements and contributions to the profession and the society.
Brewer’s citation reads “For passionately supporting communication between those who practice and those who teach in the field of technical communication, and for promoting global communication to students of technical writing.”
Brewer is committed to supporting communication between those who practice and those who teach in the field of technical communication. She is an expert in international virtual team communication, working with and researching virtual teams globally. Most recently, she has signed a contract with IEEE Press/Wiley to write a book on the topic of international virtual teams (part of the upcoming Professional Engineering Communication series).
She is a graduate of Texas Tech University and teaches in Appalachian’s Department of English. She also has worked as a technical communicator for such companies as Mead Data Central (now LexisNexis) and Cincom Systems.
Brewer is a senior member of STC and manager of the Academic Special Interest Group. She is also a member of the IEEE Professional Communication Society, the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication and the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing.
