Nov. 7, 2012. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week will be held at Appalachian State University Nov. 10 – 17 featuring events intended bring attention to issues of poverty, hunger and homelessness. The public is invited to participate, unless otherwise noted.
The Appalachian Student Ambassadors are hosting the “Beat Hunger Canned Food Drive” during Appalachian’s Black Saturday football game on Nov. 10 from 12-4 p.m. Game attendants are encouraged to bring a canned food item to the game. The collection benefits the Hunger and Health Coalition. In addition, the Appalachian Student Ambassadors are collecting canned food Nov. 5-10 at the Plemmons Student Union Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in Trivette Hall from 4-10 p.m. each day
APPS and Eggers Hall Council are co-sponsoring an “Open Mic” night at Crossroads coffeehouse in Appalachian’s Plemmons Student Union on Nov. 14 beginning at 7 p.m. Organizers encourage attendants to bring a canned good to support the Hunger and Health Coalition.
The feature-length film “Give A Damn?,” highlighting the journey of three friends attempting to live in poverty on $1.25 a day across Europe, America and Africa, will be shown Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Greenbriar Theatre. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with local experts on hunger and homelessness issues. This event is co-sponsored by People Fighting Poverty, PeaceJam and Amnesty International.
In addition to these events, students will volunteer at Habitat for Humanity, the Hospitality House and the Hunger and Health Coalition, as well as participate in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet, a one-week food stamp challenge and an adopt-a-family event.
