Hayes School at ASU Presents a Busy Week of Ensembles

Nov. 2, 2012. The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University is doing their job of keeping busy during the fall season. Their schedule includes student recitals, specific instrument ensembles and special guests such as saxophonist Paul White.

Beginning Sunday Nov. 4, a week full of musical talent will fill the ears of people in the Appalachian community. From recitals that focus on faculty to specific genres such as a jazz ensemble, the Hayes School of Music prepares to display their best for the public.

Blazing Bassoons

Nov. 4, 2012- 4-5 p.m.

Blazing Bassoons, a 12-member musical ensemble from the Hayes School of Music will perform at Appalachian State University.

The program features “Suite” by Gotthilf Heinrich Kummer, “Tenderly” by Walter Gross, “Humorous Scherzo” by Sergei Prokofiev, “Suite of Early American Tunes ” by Christopher Weait and “Celtic Spirit” by Bill Douglas.

Dr. Jon Beebe from the Hayes School of Music is the musical coach for the ensemble.

Brass Studio Ensembles

Nov. 5, 2012- 8-9 p.m.

Recital features brass studio ensembles from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music. Performing are the Appalachian Horn Choir directed by Dr. Karen L. Robertson, Appalachian Trumpet Choir directed by Dr. James Stokes Jr., Appalachian Trombone Choir directed by Dr. Drew Leslie and the Appalachian Tuba/Euphonium Choir directed by Dr. Christopher Blaha.

The Appalachian Horn Choir will perform “Hansel und Gretel Phantasie” by Engelbert Humperdinck and “Salvation is Created” by Pavel Tchesnokov.

Selections by the Appalachian Trumpet choir include “Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury” by Benjamin Britten and “Festival Fanfare” by Nicholas J. Perrini.

The Appalachian Trombone Choir will perform “BoneWeek Fanfare VI” by Brad Edwards, “Let There Be Peace on Earth” arranged by Al Cobine and “Canzon Septimi Toni No. 2” by Giovanni Gabrieli.

The Appalachian Tuba/Euphonium Choir will perform “Appalachian Carol” by James Canter and “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst.

Faculty Recital Series: Priscilla Porterfield, Mezzo-Soprano and Friends

Nov. 6, 2012- 8-9 p.m.

Mezzo-soprano Priscilla Porterfield is the featured performer in the Hayes School of Music’s Faculty Recital.

Porterfield will be joined by organist Joby Bell, violinist Nancy Bargerstock, violinist Chung Park, cellist Kenneth Lurie, pianist Rodney Reynerson, harpist Jacquelyn Bartlett, and flutiest Kay Borkowski. All are faculty members in the Hayes School of Music.

The program includes “How Brightly Beams the Morning Star” by Philip Nicolai, “Chorale Improvisation” by Joby Bell, “Nuit d’Étoiles” by Claude Debussy, selections from “The Garden of Adonis” by Alan Hovhaness and “The Astronomers” by Richard Hundley.

Bio:

Porterfield is the vocal area coordinator in the Hayes School of Music. She has sung with the Toledo Opera in Ohio, the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Ohio Light Opera.

Equally as versatile within the concert repertoire, she sings regularly with chamber music groups and orchestras throughout North Carolina as well as the Midwest. Her recent interest in the Anglo-American ballad and its influence on the Appalachian region resulted in a travel grant to sing a series of recitals in Great Britain. She was invited to sing and lecture at the Elphinstone Institute of the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland.

She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan.

Jazz Ensemble I

Nov. 7, 2012- 8-9 p.m.

Saxophonist Paul White joins Jazz Ensemble 1 for a performance at Appalachian State University.

White earned his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University. He earned a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. He currently is a staff sergeant and bass saxophonist for The Jazz Ambassadors of the U.S. Army Field Band based in Washington, D.C.

He is a founding member of the Austin, Texas-based Paul White Quintet.

The Nov. 7 performance will feature many of White’s compositions. He will be soloist on “Blues in Another Minute” by Thad Jones.
