May 17, 2012. On Wednesday, May 16, renovation on the Downtown Boone Post Office began. Asheville Global Environmental is now working on removing asbestos and lead-based paint, and in the coming weeks Boone-based Greene Construction will begin work on the building.

In a letter written on May 8, David R. Jones Architecture recommended that Greene Construction be awarded the contract.

According to Greg Young, Town Manager, Greene Construction was awarded the contract at the Tuesday Town Council meeting due to being the lowest responsible bidder. Their bid for the renovations totaled $1,189,454.

“The architect was familiar with their work and familiar with the history of their work, and there was no reason to reject this bid for any reason,” said Young.

Once Asheville Global Environmental is finished with their portion of the work, there will be a pre-construction meeting and then a notice to proceed, Young said.

“That will probably be another three to four weeks before that is all completed,” said Young.

Renovation inside the building will be to provide office space for the Town of Boone to use. Young said that once work is complete, the Planning and Inspections Department will be moving into the downstairs office space.
