Presented on Netflix’s YouTube channel and introduced by Reese Witherspoon, the event raised money for World Central Kitchen and included a Zoom reunion of the cast reprising their roles from the 1991 Charles Shyer-directed comedy, including Diane Keaton, Steve Martin, Kieran Culkin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Martin Short and George Newbern, with Ben Platt and Florence Pugh as the children all grown up.
With “Part 3” being set in 2020 amid the pandemic, Martin wore a face mask and encouraged his family to use Clorox wipes, disinfect cardboard packages and remove their shoes before entering their homes.
During the family Zoom, Culkin’s character, Matty Banks, dropped the news that he’s planning to get married to his girlfriend Rachel, played by Alexandra Shipp, right there during the call.
“I was looking forward to being father of the groom, at a big wedding I didn’t have to pay for,” said Martin, while Pugh declared, “Personally, I think this is a brilliant, beyond brilliant idea.”
Robert De Niro appeared as Rachel’s father, while Short’s character, Franck Eggelhoffer, officiated the marriage. “Honey, I wish I could have walked you down the aisle,” says De Niro. His daughter responds, “I know dad, but this is safer for everyone.”
