Nov. 10, 2012. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck Appalachia at 12:08 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10.

In the High Country, the earthquake was felt in at least Boone, Jefferson, Beaver Dam, Zionville, North Wilkesboro, Elk Park and Mountain City, Tenn., according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s “response” page and local Facebook posts.

The epicenter of the quake was about 8 miles from Whitesburg, Ky., which is about 97 miles from Boone, the agency reported.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Paul Caruso told NBC News that the tremor was felt from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Atlanta, Ga.

“Normally, we don’t expect major damage with this kind of intensity,” Caruso said, adding that major damage, which is usually associated with magnitudes higher than 5.5,  is “not out of the question.”
