May 24, 2012. According to Bluegrass Today, Doc Watson, 89, was hospitalized after falling on Monday. First, he arrived at Watauga Medical Center after the incident and then airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Doc recently cancelled a show in Mountain City for health reasons after the extreme heat during the four-day MerleFest in Wilkesboro.
According to newspaper reports, it’s possible that Doc may have a case of pneumonia, as well as he may be suffering from kidney failure. The Winston-Salem Journal reported that, “Watson’s manager, Mitchell Greenhill, said he’d called Baptist today and was told that Watson was in the intensive care unit, but wasn’t able to learn much more.”
The Charlotte Observer added, “Watson is scheduled to perform June 30 at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh, a tribute show called “Celebrating Doc.” In 2008, at age 85, he was playing shows just a month after major surgery to have a growth removed from a lung.”
