Construction work has begun on a one-acre parcel at the corner of N.C. 105 Extension and State Farm Road, the site of a future Zaxby’s restaurant.

Boone Planning Director Bill Bailey said that his office has issued all of the permits for the construction project.

“They are currently working on underground stream conveyances. Then they can start on the building stuff,” Bailey said in a brief email.

In November 2013, a representative for Zaxby’s was set to appear before the Boone Board of Adjustment to apply for a Special Use Permit because of transitional zones with a neighborhood nearby.

The proceedings were delayed until February 2014, when the Boone Board of Adjustment approved two variance requests and the special use permit for the project.

Representatives of Zaxby’s requested variances to reduce spacing requirements in between driveways and reduce the size of the landscape buffer between the proposed restaurant site and surrounding businesses such as State Farm Bureau Insurance.

The application for the special use permit was to address lighting, noise and other factors involved in the parcel falling within a transitional zone, near the Beverly Heights neighborhood.

In attendance were residents along Beverly Heights Avenue that were against the project, concerned, for one, that this project would bring extra traffic through the neighborhood as the restaurant will have two points of access, one off of N.C. 105 Extension and another off of Beverly Heights Avenue.

In December 2014, Bailey said that construction hadn’t begun because the company hadn’t provided plans proving that they “conform.” He said the “delays were on their end.”

Reached on Monday and again on Tuesday, a Zaxby’s spokesperson hadn’t yet tracked down details regarding the Boone project.

It’s unclear when Zaxby’s will be open, ready to serve chicken fingers.
