Cinco de Mayo in High Country on Saturday; Largest Full Moon of Year Calls for Wild Mexican Celebration

May 2, 2012. Cinco de Mayo is Saturday, May 5, and many establishments in the High Country are celebrating the pride and heritage of Mexico. This year’s Cinco de Mayo may be a bit more wild than years past because of the full moon, which happens to be the biggest full moon of the year. Cinco de Mayo Stash Bash at Char on Saturday, May 5

Char hosts its first annual Cinco de Mayo Stash Bash on Saturday, May 5. The party starts at 10:30 p.m. and features door prizes, such as sombreros, throughout the night to those sporting “Awesome Mustaches,” be they real, fake or drawn. Drink specials include $2 Coronas, $3 margaritas, $4 Jose Especial, and $6 Patron. 18 and up.

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra and The Brand New Life at Murphy’s Saturday

Jonathan Scales is a classically trained composer turned steel pan maestro, who has influences ranging from Igor Stravinsky to Kanye West. Driftwood Magazine wrote, “Scales is to steel pans ….what Bela Fleck is to the banjo—an über innovator.” The group is said to have “a Thelonius Monk-like attitude with a Mozart creativity that works.”

Contra Dance at the Apple Barn on Cinco de Mayo

Fun dance for all! Looking  for fun? Are you 16 years old, or 37, or 60? We enjoy a mixed age community dance, called contra dancing,  and we have a lesson before our dance so you can learn. Great live music too.

The Boone Country Dancers are hosting a Contra Dance at the Apple Barn on Saturday May 5. George Segebad is the caller for this dance and the Ubiquitones are the band. All dances are taught, no partner is required and everyone is welcome. Beginners Lesson at 7:30, dance at 8:00. The Apple Barn is in Valle Crucis just off Hwy 194, 1 mile from Valle Crucis School. P.B. Scotts Annual Reunion Party Saturday, May 5

The annual P.B. Scott’s Reunion Party, now in its seventh year, is a celebration of the legendary P.B. Scott’s Music Hall in Blowing Rock. The event takes place at Canyons in Blowing Rock on Saturday, May 5, at 9:30 p.m with live music by alternative 80’s band Orange Crush. The cover is $5 dollar.
