Flat Top Manor Upstairs Tours

Join a ranger for a tour of the second floor of the beautiful, former home of Moses and Bertha Cone.  Tours are held Saturdays and Sundays and last about 45 minutes. Tours will end the weekend of Oct. 21, 2012.    

Tour Days & Times: Saturday and Sundays at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and afternoons at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Reservations are required and accepted on a first-come basis by phone or walk-ins. There are a limited number of people allowed on each tour. Call 828-295-3782 or sign up at the NPS information desk at the Moses Cone Manor House. Reservations are accepted beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday for the weekend of the requested tour only.

 

Sunday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

“Cone Cemetery Hike”

Are the mysterious happenings at the Cone Manor real or just our imagination? You decide. Hike to the cemetery with the rangers and learn about the people who once spent their summers here and the strange occurrences at the house. Meet on the front porch of the manor house and bring water and a flashlight with you for this 2-mile, round-trip hike.

“A Tale of Two Spinsters”

Join a ranger to discuss the lives of Claribel and Etta Cone. The two sisters of Moses Cone who defined themselves as art collectors. Meet on the front porch of the Flat Top Manor house and bring a lawn chair.

Come sing, dance and play while learning about the parkway’s black bears. This 1-hour program is perfect for the whole family.

Bring your camera and join the ranger for a hike led by professional photographer James J. Shaffer. He’ll lead you along the moderate, 2-mile, round-trip Rough Ridge Trail where nature’s beauty is at its most splendid. Shaffer will give pointers on how to capture this beauty with your camera. Linn Cove Visitor Center – Milepost 304

“Steel and Stone: The nature preserved by the Linn Cove Viaduct”

In 1979, workers set out to complete the final link of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The engineering marvel that they built, now called “the Linn Cove Viaduct,” would do much less damage to the mountainside than traditional road-building techniques. Not one trout was disturbed. Not one boulder was displaced. Come discover the nature that the viaduct saved during this 1-hour moderate/strenuous hike. Bring water and wear your good hiking shoes.

Talk with a Ranger and Meet some Mountain Critters

As you’re cruising along the parkway, stop at the Linn Cove Visitor Center and talk with a ranger with a few animal taxidermies the (Beaver, Bear, Bobcat and Bunny Rabbit). Learn some interesting facts about the wildlife that call the Blue Ridge forest their “home.”
