Organizers for Blood Sweat and Gears, a charity ride that just completed its 17th year, held the 50-mile ride but cancelled the 100-mile ride due to weather forecasts.

“We understand the inconvenience this decision causes, but remain steadfast in our concern for rider safety,” Ride Director Scott Nelson wrote in an email to the more than 1,200 registered participants.

After the weekend, Nelson reached out to the participants and noted that in a couple week the BSG team will hold a meeting and discuss making those who registered for the 100-mile ride “whole.”

“What made it difficult is the inconvenience, disappointment, and frustration that we inevitably inflict on our 100 mile riders. We were cognizant of it in our decision making process, but with such an ominous weather forecast we opted for safety first,” Nelson wrote.

For the most part, all of the participants supported the decision – or at least supported BSG looking out for the safety of all of its riders.

One fellow posted on Facebook, “I personally prefer it to be the rider’s decision, however I understand, respect and accept the decision by BSG. Thank you for a great event.”

However as Nelson pointed out, insurance companies that cover BSG for the event wouldn’t look at it that way if someone were to suffer a severe injury during severe weather that was previously forecasted well in advance.

As rider noted, BSG made the right call:

“Good call BSG. It was dry for the 50 and it poured cats and dogs a short while later which would have put many on the 100 in dangerous situations. You got right, see you next year. Actually, see you in Sept for the fall ride,” Tom Pearman wrote.
