Nov. 5, 2012. Brian DeRouen, a social justice advocate, will conduct a non-violence training session at Appalachian State University on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. in room 11 of Anne Belk Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
DeRouen will focus on situations that students and activists could potentially find themselves in as well as discuss the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), a U.S. Department of Defense Institute located at Fort Benning, Ga. WHINSEC, formally known as the School of the Americas, has attracted protesters for years.
DeRouen is certified in non-violent direct action training and was featured in the documentary “On the Line” along with Susan Sarandon, Martin Sheen and Father Roy Bourgeois.
He is a graduate of the University of Dayton, and while completing his studies he worked as a graduate assistant in the university’s Center for Social Concern. Through his work DeRouen organized trips to El Salvador and vigils/protests at Fort Benning to protest human rights abuses committed by some School of the Americas’ graduates in Latin America. He has also taught classes on voluntary simplicity.
“Non-violence is a guiding principle in my life and I really enjoy conducting non-violence trainings,” said DeRouen.
This event is sponsored by Appalachian’s Amnesty International and Invisible Children chapters.
