BRAHM Celebrates Daingerfield’s 153rd Birthday on Saturday, March 24; Exhibit Closes Friday, March 30

Elliott Daingerfield would be 153 years old next weekend.

March 19, 2012. The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum hosts Elliott Daingerfield’s birthday celebration and the closing of BRAHM’s inaugural exhibit, “Elliott Daingerfield: Art and Life in North Carolina,” on Saturday, March 24, 2012. The birthday celebrations lasts all day, but from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. the party will feature refreshments, children’s activities, a special tour and free admission. 

Elliot Daingerfield: Art and Life in North Carolina includes artifacts, drawings and photographs and 86 paintings by the late artist, who was a North Carolina native and summer resident of Blowing Rock that lived on the property adjacent and bordering the museum, which is a 23,000-square-foot building with 4,500 feet of gallery space.

The theme of the current exhibits is “What Draws You Here?” Aside from the Daingerfield exhibit, the other two exhibits include Historic Hotels of Blowing Rock and Blowing Rock: A Natural Draw

 The museum hours are:

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday – 10 to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday – 10 to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday – 10 to 7  p.m.
  • Friday – 10 to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday – 10 to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

BRAHM to Celebrate Artist’s Birthday, Exhibit

Elliott and Joe Dulaney, grandsons of Elliott Daingerfield, with High Noon, a painting that features their grandmother, Anna, with their mother Gwendoline and aunt Marjorie as children on the grounds of their summer home, “Westglow.” The Dulaney brothers were instrumental in the construction of the Museum as well as the success of the inaugural exhibit.

March 19, 2012 – On Saturday, March 24, the Blowing Rock Art and HistoryMuseumwill celebrate both the 153rd birthday of the artist Elliott Daingerfield and the culmination of its inaugural exhibit dedicated to him. Admission will be free from 2 until 4 p.m. and the event will include refreshments, a special tour of the exhibit, door prizes and a children’s activity inspired by the artist’s animal sketches. 

Since Elliott Daingerfield: Art and Life in North Carolina opened on October 1, nearly 3,700 visitors from 36 states and 3 countries have toured the exhibit. It has received regional and national attention, being featured in travel blogs such as The Southern Cosmopolitan and the respected quarterly magazine American Art Review. Saturday’s event will mark the exhibit’s successes as well as pay appropriate tribute to the Daingerfield family’s deep roots in the town.

“Blowing Rock was special to Elliott Daingerfield,” said BRAHM Executive Director Joann Mitchell. “He came here to find health and inspiration, and the town became very dear to both him and his family. It has been a great honor for the Museum to be able to commemorate Daingerfield’s life here and the continued presence of his grandsons, Joe and Elliott, who have worked so diligently to ensure that their grandfather’s spirit lives on.”

The last day to see the exhibit in full is Friday, March 30. Over the next two weeks, the Museum will be hosting a number of traveling groups and museums from across the region who are taking advantage of the opportunity to see this special exhibit before it leaves BRAHM. An abbreviated version of the exhibit will travel to theCameronArt MuseuminWilmingtonfrom May 25 through August 19.
