Boone Service League Meets Aug. 7; High Country Women Invited to Become New Members

July 31, 2012. The Boone Service League will hold its first monthly meeting of the 2012-13 year on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Deerfield Methodist Church in Boone.

Light refreshments and fellowship begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a business meeting at 7 p.m. At the meeting, the league will collect school supplies for area youth.

Established in 1957 as an auxiliary women’s organization to the Boone Jaycees, the Boone Service League is open to women ages 21 and older living in the High Country area, including Watauga, Ashe and Avery counties.

Boasting a membership of 60, the Boone Service League is one of the largest and most active women’s service groups in the High Country. Its purpose is to provide individual development and leadership experience for women and to promote community service.

In 2011-12, the Boone Service League awarded $7,000 in grants to eight High Country organizations and presented two $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors. Boone Service League members also held food and supplies drives, volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program and provided financial assistance for families in crisis.

To fund community needs throughout the year, the league hosts a holiday craft market at Watauga High School, wraps holiday gifts at Boone Mall, coordinates spring and holiday pictures and hosts an annual spring fundraiser and silent auction. Last year’s fundraiser, Motown in the Mountains, was an amazing success, drawing more than 200 people to Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock for a night of live music, dancing, food and shopping.

The Boone Service League openly seeks new members who are interested in providing much-needed service while meeting new friends. While women are welcome to join the organization at any time, the August meeting is an opportune time for prospective members to visit, as it is the first meeting of the 2012-13 session.
