Board of Education to Announce New Superintendent at Margarat E. Gragg Education Center Tonight at 7 p.m.

June 4, 2012. The Watauga County Board of Education will conclude their two-month search for a new superintendent tonight at the Margarat E. Gragg Education Center/Board of Education to introduce the county’s new Superintendent.

The Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. concerning the selection. The new Supt. will be introduced to the public at 7:00 p.m.

The search for a new Supt. began in September, when former Supt. Marty Hemric announced he would be taking over the same position in Wilkes County, where he served as Assistant Supt. from 2007-08. Hemric assumed the position on Jan. 1.

Wilkes will provide a new challenge to Hemric. Their system holds 22 schools and 10,000 students, more than twice the nine schools and 4,600 students in Watauga.

Former Supt. Dick Jones, who served from 1998-2003, took over as interim Supt. and will continue serving until June 30.

Applications for the Watauga County position were due by Feb. 24. Board Chairwoman Deborah Miller said 32 applications were received. Each of the board’s five members has been reviewing the applications since then. Interviews were conducted in April and May.

The new Supt. will take their position on July 1.
