Blue Ridge Parkway Ranger Programs July 4-8 Offer Moses Cone Tours, Cemetery Hike and Black Bears 101

Saturdays and Sundays

Flat Top Manor Upstairs Tours

Join a ranger for a tour of the second floor of the beautiful, former home of Moses and Bertha Cone.  Tours are held Saturdays and Sundays and last about 45 minutes. Tours will end the weekend of October 21, 2012.    

Tour Days & Times: Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and afternoons at 2 and 3 p.m.

Reservations Required: Accepted on a first-come basis by phone or walk-ins: There are a limited number of persons allowed on each tour. Please call 828-295-3782 or sign up at the NPS information desk at the Moses Cone Manor House. (Reservations are accepted beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday for the weekend of the requested tour only).

 

Wednesday, July 4 at 11 a.m. (Meet at Bass Lake)

Moses Cone: “The Man Who Achieved the American Dream”

Born into an impoverished, immigrant family, Moses Cone had to work hard to become the success that we know of today. Bring a picnic lunch and join the ranger at the Bass Lake comfort station to celebrate this American man.

 

Sunday, July 8 at 7 p.m.

The Cone Cemetery Hike:

Join the rangers for a 2-mile evening stroll to Moses and Bertha Cone’s final resting place. Discover more about the Cone family…both their good and bad times.  Meet on the Cone Manor Porch wearing good walking shoes and bring water and a flashlight for this 1.5 hour hike.

Friday, July 6 at 7 p.m.

“Lost-Proofing” S T O P:  It’s a universal symbol used all over the world. It’s also the first thing you do when you realize you’re lost in the woods. Join a ranger to learn how to be found safe and sound when you’re lost.

 

Saturday, July 7 at 7 p.m.

“Black Bears 101”

Come sing, dance, and play while learning about the Parkway’s black bears. This 1-hour program is perfect for the whole family.

 

Linn Cove Visitor Center – Milepost 304.4

 

Friday, July 6 at 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Talk with a Ranger and Meet some Mountain Critters!

As you’re cruising along the parkway, stop at the Linn Cove Viaduct and meet a ranger with a few animal taxidermies (raccoon, grey squirrel, wild turkey, and bobcat). Learn some interesting facts about the wildlife that call the Blue Ridge forest their “home.”
