Avery County Humane Society Announces Kick Off of ‘Name Your Price’ to Make Room at the Shelter

Sept. 4, 2012. The shelter is getting crowded, so Avery County Humane Society has started another Name Your Price promotion for any adult cat or dog until Oct. 15. You don’t have to live in Avery County to qualify for this unique opportunity to pick a pet and save over 75 percent off the regular $85 price.

“We feel everyone should have something invested in their animal so we have a $25 minimum donation. I should point out that this is perhaps the largest and best selection of adult animals we have seen in the history of the shelter,” remarked Charlene Calhoun, shelter manager.

She continued saying that the abundance of adult animals has encouraged this special promotion, fully supported by donors. “We held an event like this two months ago and virtually emptied the cat cages of all adult cats and many of the dogs. We found good homes for our animals and want to do that now.”

This is a great time to adopt a cat or dog, with support of staff and volunteers who care for them,” remarked board member Bill Avery. He continued, “Special promotions like this are how Avery County Humane Society has come a long way in preventing unnecessary killing of animals and how we have dealt with overcrowding this past year. When we get to a critical point, we take bold measures to never again “put down” a healthy adoptable animal. Our euthanasia rate in 2012 is half of what it was last year because no healthy adoptable animal is euthanized.”

To see some of our beautiful and amazing animals at the shelter, just go online to www.averyhumane.org or stop by Monday through Saturday 10-5, or call 828-733-2333.
