May 2, 2014. An unidentified teacher at Avery County High School has been reprimanded after a “birthday spanking” she gave a student in March was recorded on a student’s cellphone in class.

WSOC-TV reported that Avery County Schools Supt. David Burleson said that the long-time teacher wasn’t suspended. Instead, Burleson said the teacher was reprimanded verbally and in writing after school officials sought legal counsel on how to handle the incident.

Facebook comments on the incident ranged from the “teacher should be fired [for being] completely inappropriate ” to “people just need to lighten up.”
