April 16, 2012. NEWLAND — On Thursday, April 19, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., the Avery County Humane Society’s Adoption and Humane Education Center in Newland will open its doors to the public for the first time.

The new, 21,000 sq. ft. facility features a bright and spacious lobby and pet boutique, 34 cat condos, 29 double dog runs, an education and community room and space for future development of a spay/neuter and veterinary clinic. A cat play room allows visitors to view fancy felines at play, and dog and cat adopt areas provide quiet space for volunteers and adopting families to spend time socializing puppies and kittens or getting to know a pet before adopting.

Receiving areas provide space for examination and treatment of new arrivals, quarantine space shelters sick or injured animals, and separate areas house healthy pets that are ready and waiting for their forever homes. The staff of Avery Humane will be standing by to help you find just the right match for you and your family.

The new shelter is located at 279 New Vale Rd., right next door to the Paws and Claws resale store. Paws and Claws reopens for the season on April 19 as well, selling gently used household items and furniture with the proceeds of all sales benefiting the Avery County Humane Society.

Operating hours at the new shelter will remain Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday for adoption only from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. until further notice. The new ACHS  phone number is 828-733-2333. Mail will continue to be received at PO Box 1213, Newland, NC 28657.
