ASU’s Hayes School of Music To Host Three Concerts; Orchestra on April 27; Two Performances April 29

April 23, 2012. BOONE — On Friday, April 27, Eduardo Vargas conducts the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The performance will feature student soloists who won the Hayes School of Music’s Concerto-Aria Competition. They are pianist Jonathan Asbell and percussionist Benjamin Russell.

Asbell will perform the second movement from Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26.” Russell will perform the first movement from “Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra” by Marta Ptazsynska.

The orchestra also will perform “March to the Scaffold” from Hector Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique” and Haydn’s “Symphony No. 104 in D major” known as the “London” symphony.

Asbell is a piano student of Dr. Rodney Reynerson. Currently a junior at Appalachian, he is double-majoring in music performance and mathematical physics.

Russell is a student of Dr. Rob Falvo. A candidate for the Master of Music degree in percussion performance, Russell is a graduate assistant in the Hayes School of Music where his duties include teaching the percussion methods class, conducting and coaching the Percussion Ensemble, and teaching private lessons to undergraduate percussion students.

Then, on Sunday, April 29, there will be two different concerts at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Violist Eric Koontz joins the Appalachian Repertory Orchestra for an April 29 performance. Also performing will be the Appalachian Concert Band. The program begins at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The repertory orchestra, directed by Will Selle, will perform Ralph Vaughn Williams’s “The Charterhouse Suite,” two selections from Edvard Grieg’s “Elegiac Melodies” and “Grave-Allegro” from Felix Mendelssohn’s “Sinfonia No. 9.” Koontz will be featured on “Paul Hindemith’s “Trauermusik.”

The concert band, directed by graduate student Justin Hammonds, will perform Alfred Reed’s “A Festival Prelude,” Francis McBeth’s “Kaddish,” two selections from Frank Ticheli’s “Cajun Folk Songs” and Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E-Flat.”

The vocal group “Quintessential!” will perform April 29 at 5 p.m. at ASU. The free performance will be presented in Broyhill Music Center’s Hayes School of Music.

Quintessential! is an ensemble of five graduate students – soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone, and pianist – whose assistantship comprises the opportunity of learning, rehearsing and performing a diverse collection of repertoire on and off campus, both in the community and the surrounding region.

Members are Katherine Edahl, soprano; Sabbath Ward, mezzo-soprano; Johnny Harmon, tenor; David Clark, baritone; and pianists Monica Nordelo, Susan Slingland, Aaron Ames and Hollie Lacy.

The program includes works by Robert Schumann, Vincenzo Bellini, José María Vitier, Gioachino Rossini and Beethoven.
