ASU Sponsors ‘Celebrate You!’ Throughout October

Sept. 27, 2012. October is a month to “Celebrate You!” at Appalachian State University with a series of events focused on self-esteem, self-acceptance and empowerment. This is the fourth year the university has sponsored “Celebrate you!,” an Appalachian-originated campaign developed in collaboration with filmmaker Diane Israel. The program and its curriculum are now offered to colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada.

An online calendar of events can be found at http://celebrateyou.appstate.edu/. For more information, contact Denise Lovin at 828-262-3180 or lovindm@appstate.edu.

Highlights include:

Oct. 1 – Letting Go and Letting In Bonfire, 8:30 p.m., Duck Pond Field

This event encourages personal growth and an opportunity to let go of negative messages in one’s life. The night will offer empowerment, enlightenment and entertainment with drumming and performances involving fire, water and earth.

Oct. 1, 8 and 15 – Sheet Art, noon to 1 p.m., Sanford Mall (weather permitting)

Students and passers-by are encouraged to “paint away” on sheets any thoughts, images and messages they want to let go of. These phrases and images will then be washed away with water on site, leaving only a trace of color behind, allowing for more cleanse painting to continue on the canvases. Later in the month, the sheets will be dried and hung up on view for the public.

Oct. 3 – International Coffee Hour – Beauty Across Cultures, 12:30-2 p.m., Whitewater Café in Plemmons Student Union

The International Coffee Hour is a popular gathering time for free coffee, food and lively conversation with campus’s international community.

Oct. 4 – Meditation Mob, 12-1 p.m., Sanford Mall

During the Meditation Mob, people will come together to promote positive change in the world through silent meditation and sound bathing.

This is the last race in the Triple Crown series and is an official event of the university’s Homecoming. Proceeds benefits Girls on the Run of the High Country, a self-esteem building program.
