ASU Professor Published in Grateful Dead 3-CD Set

Aug. 28, 2012. Chip Williams, an assistant professor in Appalachian State University’s technical photography program, has added a new name to his list of clients: The Grateful Dead. “Dave’s Picks Volume 3,” a newly released Grateful Dead CD, includes five of Williams’ architectural photographs of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre.

The limited edition, three-CD set features the Grateful Dead’s Oct. 22, 1971, performance at the theatre. Rhino Records’ producers contacted Williams about publishing some of his interior architectural photographs of the landmark theater to illustrate the beauty of the concert venue and have included them in the CD set’s booklet.

Williams’ photographs, originally shot for the Chicago Auditorium Theatre, highlight the beauty and character of the theater’s design and architectural details.

The limited edition 12,000 copies have already sold out.

Prior to coming to Appalachian in August 2011, Williams worked as a commercial and editorial freelance photographer for 18 years in Chicago, where he shot for national magazines including Smithsonian, US News & World Report, ESPN the Magazine, Kiplinger’s, Money and Parade, among others.

Designed by the famed architectural team of Adler & Sullivan with help from a young draftsman named Frank Lloyd Wright, the internationally acclaimed theater opened in 1889.
