Aug. 9, 2012. Members of the Blue Ridge Fine Arts Guild (BRAG) are honoring Avery County in the BRAG on AVERY art exhibit at the Dickson Gallery located inside of Cannon Memorial Hospital Aug. 7 to Sept. 28.
The interesting thing about this particular showcase is that each of the 23 artists being displayed have picked a scene from the landscape of Avery County to portray in their work. A range of mediums are being used including: oil paint, pastel, soft pastel, watercolor, mixed media and photomontage. Prices of each piece of art range anywhere from $75 to $1,800.
The Blue Ridge Fine Arts Guild members are all residents of the High Country area spread across Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. They’ve chosen the landscape of Avery County as the focus for this exhibit because of its large range of beauty to choose from. Caitlin Morehouse, the gallery director at the Avery Arts Council, explains that this area is special and that the focus of these works brings excitement to the exhibit. Above is a work by Barbara Kahn titled The Spirit of Elk Falls.
Gaylene Pectu, an artist being featured, chose the view of Grandfather Mountain from the Banner House Museum (on right) because this scene “continues to fascinate me. I’ve painted that beautiful view three times at different seasons, and different parts of day.” She goes on to explain how the light on the grassy area around Elk River guides the eye up to Grandfather. It’s the artist’s attention to the simplest of detail that makes their 2-D art truly special.
The reception of this exhibit will be held on Aug. 10 at the Dickson Gallery inside Cannon Memorial Hospital. People of all ages who share in the love of Avery are welcome to come and view these beautiful works of art. Food and drinks will be available along with the chance to chat with the artists from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There is no doubt that this inspiring display of Avery County through the eyes of each artist brings the life of the surrounding landscape inside for all viewers to experience.
